Embry-Riddle Sports Medicine facility receives greatly needed upgrades to Athletic Training room.

 

 

Thanks to the effort of the Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University Prescott campus the AthleticTraining room received some much needed upgrades to the Sports Medicine facility.  “We have more than doubled our square footage going from two treatment tables to four. We have added several new modalities ranging from ultrasound to electrical stimulation all the way to intermittent compression.  We have added taping tables, and several anatomic models to help enhance the treatment and rehabilitation of ERAU campus community.” Josh Schmidt ATC (Head Athletic Trainer) In all the new upgrades to the Athletic Training facilities allow the Sports Medicine Team of ERAU to provide better care to the campus community

As a former athlete myself, I realize that athletics are very demanding on the human body.  That is why the sports medicine staff of Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University, Prescott are dedicated to the general health and well being of each and every student athlete.  We are dedicated to making sure that only the highest quality of care is given to our student athletes.  We know that it is important for student athletes to have proper treatment, rehabilitation, and prevention in order to be successful in both their sports and daily lives.  We take extreme pride in working with young individuals such as those that attend Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University.

Joshua Michael Schmidt Med, ATC, LAT

Head Athletic Trainer

  

Raised in the Sierra Nevada’s Josh took the role of the Head Athletic Trainer at ERAU in July of 2005.   He attended Fresno State University where he obtained a Bachelor's degree in Kinesiology with an emphasis in Sports Medicine.  After that he went on to do a two year Graduate Assistantship at Northern Arizona University wear he obtained his Master's Degree in Educational Leadership.  During his time at Northern Arizona University Josh worked closely with the Sports Medicine team and the Athletic Training curriculum program.  Josh has worked with a variety of teams including but not limited to football, baseball, soccer, volleyball, the professional bull riders organization, and many more.  Josh is both a Certified Athletic Trainer through the NATA and a Licensed Athletic Trainer through the state of Arizona. Both he and his wife Terra, who is also a Head Athletic Trainer at Yavapai Community College, are excited to be part of the Prescott community.  “I really like the university setting of athletics.  I have worked from the high school level all the way to the professional level, and the university is by far the best.  The athletes are fun to be around, and love to play the game.”  In addition to the love of athletics Josh also shares a love for the outdoors.  He is currently a volunteer with the YCSRT (Yavapai County Search Response Team) through the Sheriff’s Office.  Josh is the Assistant Training coordinator for the Backcountry Unit.  “I have always wanted to help people.  By being a member of the Search and Rescue team for the Sherriff’s office of Yavapai County I get to help people and get a lot of additional exciting experience such as rappelling, flying in helicopters, caving,  technical rescue and many more things.”  Lastly Josh is a volunteer with the local Red Cross where he teaches such topics as First Aid, Adult, Child, Infant CPR, Professional Rescue CPR, Wilderness First Aid, and many more classes that benefit the local community.

Michelle Cronin, Student Athletic Trainer

Michelle joins the Embry-Riddle Sports Medicine staff from Yavapai College were she ran Cross Country for two years and assisted as a Student Athletic Trainer for the 2006-2007 school year.  Michelle has recently been accepted to Fresno State were she will continue her education in Sports Medicine starting in the Spring of 2008.  Michelle originates from California in the San Luis Obispo area.  She enjoys running, hiking, mountain biking and Athletic Training.

Dr. Daniel Burchfield, Team Physician

Dr. Daniel Burchfield MD, PhD, has been the team physician for Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University athletics since his relocation to Prescott in 1998.  He is a founding partner of Orthopedic Specialists and works with most of the teams in the Prescott area including Yavapai College, the local rodeo circuits, and the local High Schools.  Dr. Burchfield or "Doc" was the team physician for the USA Swim team at the World Championships in Perth, Australia in 1998 as well as the USA Jr. National Swim Team for the Sydney Olympic Youth Festival in 2000. He has a Bachelor's Degree from the University of California at Riverside, where he was a varsity athlete in Water Polo and Swimming.  Dr. Burchfield has a Master’s Degree from the Ohio State University as well as a Doctorate in Muscle Physiology from the Ohio State University.  Dr. Burchfield obtained his MD from the Medical College of Ohio.  After Obtaining his MD he performed a residency at the Mayo clinic in Rochester Connecticut.  Once he finished his residency, Dr. Burchfield then had a two year sports medicine fellowship at UCLA.  Dr. Burchfield is currently a member of the Board of Directors at the YMCA, and the Medical Director of physical medicine and rehab services at Yavapai Regional Medical Center. His interests are his family, backpacking, wood working, photography, and fly fishing.
